I&#8217;ve spoken to this engaged and perceptive group of adult learners before, on topics having to do with human evolution. \u00a0This time I spoke to my current research and teaching interests. \u00a0I gave a talk called <i>Denver: An Archaeological and Contemporary History<\/i>. It will give you a sense of the ground covered.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Denver-Archaeological-Sarah-M-Nelson\/dp\/0870819356\/ref=tmm_pap_title_0?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1371129690&amp;sr=8-1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2718\" src=\"http:\/\/www.interculturalurbanism.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/DenverArchHist.jpg\" alt=\"DenverArchHist\" width=\"420\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.interculturalurbanism.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/DenverArchHist.jpg 420w, http:\/\/www.interculturalurbanism.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/DenverArchHist-210x300.jpg 210w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 420px) 100vw, 420px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As I told the assembled group, this was an opportunity for me to connect the previous work I did as part of a DU anthropology department team that wrote <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Denver-Archaeological-Sarah-M-Nelson\/dp\/0870819356\/ref=tmm_pap_title_0?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1371129690&amp;sr=8-1\"><i>Denver: An Archaeological History<\/i><\/a> (originally published in 2001) to my current interest in the Intercultural City. \u00a0It was also an opportunity to reacquaint myself with material in two other fine books about Denver: Stephen Leonard and Tom Noel\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Denver-Metropolis-Stephen-J-Leonard\/dp\/0870812408\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1371076689&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=denver+mining+camp\"><i>Denver: From Mining Camp to Metropolis<\/i><\/a> (1991), and David Hill\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.historycolorado.org\/sites\/default\/files\/files\/OAHP\/crforms_edumat\/pdfs\/611.pdf\"><i>Colorado Urbanization and Planning Context<\/i><\/a>, published by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.historycolorado.org\/oahp\">History Colorado&#8217;s Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation<\/a> (1984).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.interculturalurbanism.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Denver-Books.640.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2832\" src=\"http:\/\/www.interculturalurbanism.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Denver-Books.640.jpg\" alt=\"Denver Books.640\" width=\"640\" height=\"406\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.interculturalurbanism.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Denver-Books.640.jpg 640w, http:\/\/www.interculturalurbanism.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Denver-Books.640-300x190.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Together, these three books reaffirm that Denver has always been (1) a collection of diverse lifeways, (2) a crossroads of interaction, and (3) a locus of cultural coexistence.\u00a0 \u00a0That is, Denver&#8217;s location as a distinct place on the landscape has always been \u201cmulticultural\u201d, although the relationships between interacting groups have certainly not always been peaceful or easily maintained. Whether anything can be learned from this history that\u2019s helpful in making the contemporary city more intercultural\u2014beyond establishing that the challenge of interculturalism is a long-standing one\u2014is an intriguing question.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday I had the honor of speaking in the University of Denver&#8217;s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute\u2019s (OLLI) Summer Seminar series.
