{"id":1116,"date":"2012-03-22T16:57:24","date_gmt":"2012-03-22T22:57:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.interculturalurbanism.com\/?p=1116"},"modified":"2013-01-04T10:10:56","modified_gmt":"2013-01-04T17:10:56","slug":"a-victory-for-londons-99","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.interculturalurbanism.com\/?p=1116","title":{"rendered":"A Victory for London&#8217;s 99%?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last August we wondered, in the course of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.interculturalurbanism.com\/?p=411\">writing about the London riots<\/a>, whether that city\u2019s 2012 Olympic Games would live up to their billing as the \u201cRegeneration Games\u201d for the blighted East End where they&#8217;ll be located. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/03\/20\/nyregion\/a-win-for-workers-even-before-the-london-olympics-begin.html?_r=1&amp;scp=9&amp;sq=michael%20powell&amp;st=cse\">Michael Powell<\/a>, writing in this week\u2019s <em>New York Times<\/em>, reports some promising movement on this front.\u00a0 He describes tactics used by the organization <a href=\"http:\/\/www.citizensuk.org\/category\/london-citizens\/\">London Citizens<\/a> to win <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ippr.org\/articles\/56\/8726\/community-organisers-help-1200-people-into-olympic-jobs\">better-than-minimum-wage jobs<\/a> for those who\u2019ll work within the Olympic perimeter during the Games, as well as 2000 houses for working class Londoners after the Games have ended. \u00a0Some of these are earmarked for the housing-hungry borough of <a href=\"http:\/\/hackneycitizen.co.uk\/2012\/03\/11\/olympic-village-social-housing-plans-revealed\/\">Hackney<\/a>.
